Restoring Air India's health

After ten long and agonising days, the strike by the Air India pilots was called off, thanks mainly to the government turning sensible by opting for conciliation over a witch-hunt. With 800 pilots, mostly those who were originally with Indian Airlines, striking work demanding pay parity with their counterparts who had been with Air India prior to the merger, the rate of flight cancellation rose close to 90 per cent towards the end of the strike period. It was left to the Union Civil Aviation Ministry to intervene, negotiate with the pilots union, and bring about a settlement — albeit a temporary one. Considering that the strike, which came at the height of the summer vacation season, resulted in a loss of Rs.150 crore to Rs.200 crore, it is difficult to understand why the government did not intervene earlier. The strategy and methods of the Air India management clearly worsened the situation. The basic demand of the pilots was neither new nor unreasonable: they have been seeking pay parity ever since the merger process began in 2007. It is hard to explain why the process should drag on endlessly and why most of the demands of the staff have not been seriously addressed for such a long time.
Under the interim settlement, the Ministry has given some concrete assurances. All the dismissed and suspended pilots will be reinstated; the de-recognition of the Indian Commercial Pilots' Association will be revoked; and all the other demands of the pilots will be addressed in a “time-bound” manner. The key issue of pay parity will be dealt with by the Dharmadhikari committee, which has just begun to look into the staff-related issues arising from the merger of the two airlines, and it has been required to give the report by November 2011. All categories of employees have been asked to approach it with their demands. At least this time, the Air India management must keep its word and resolve the issues by adopting a businesslike consultative process in all seriousness and sincerity. For their part, the employees and their unions must respond positively to the challenges that lie ahead. Though the national carrier has been claiming “operational profits,” the accumulated losses and its undue dependence on funding by government tell a different story. Air India needs to be run on sound commercial lines, which means it must not be discriminated against vis-à-vis the private airlines. For that to happen, it must set its own house in order, go ahead and complete its programme for aircraft acquisition, do everything necessary to restore the prestige of the ‘Maharajah' brand in a competitive environment, and win back customer loyalty.

Injured Sehwag to miss rest of IPL

Virender Sehwag has been ruled out of the rest of the IPL matches this season as he will undergo a surgery on his injured shoulder, a development, which may also make him unavailable for India’s forthcoming tour of the West Indies.
Australian all-rounder James Hopes has been appointed the captain for Delhi Daredevils remaining three matches. Delhi Daredevils CEO Amrit Mathur said that Sehwag will be proceeding to England for the surgery and Hopes has been given the responsibility of leading the team in the remaining matches.
“We will miss Sehwag. But he has to undergo the surgery and that is why he will not take any further part in the IPL”, Mathur said.
PB Vanchi, director of GMR Sports Pvt Ltd, owners of Delhi Daredevils, said that a mutual decision was taken after the Daredevils skipper held talks with the BCCI on his injury and was immediately advised to go for the surgery at the earliest.
“He has a problem. In the last match, too he struggled. The BCCI is making the arrangements for the surgery. They are waiting for a date. If he needs the surgery we are not going to be coming in the way,” Vanchi said. The Indian opener will travel to London for the surgery but the exact date is not known yet.

Five steps to an easier campus life in U.S.

Got admission for your study in the U.S.? Here's a check-list for getting an hourly job or assistantship.
One of the main questions in the mind of a student going from India to do master's in the U.S. these days is how to find an hourly job or how to find some form of assistantship. As woes of recession deepen in the U.S. and more and more hourly jobs/scholarships dwindle in schools, it is not easy to find one especially during the first semester of your graduate study. Here are five tips that can help you land a job after you get an admission for MS in a school in the U.S.
Arrive at least three weeks early
If you are in F1 visa, you are allowed to enter the U.S. four weeks before your classes actually start. Try going to the U.S. at least three weeks before the classes start so that you have time to apply for whatever hourly jobs remaining in your school. If you land in the school, say, one week before the classes start then forget about the hourly jobs as most of them may have been already taken.
Networking
When I joined graduate school in Fall 2001, I came almost three weeks in advance and I started applying for most of the hourly jobs posted in the school website for almost two weeks. I was not even getting any interview calls. Finally I got a job in the football stadium. I even didn't send my resume for that job. A friend of mine who already had that job recommended me. I got my second job — a front assistant in a dormitory also through the recommendation by another friend working there. So even for getting an hourly job networking is important. So I suggest anyone coming to pursue graduate studies start networking even before he lands up in the U.S. for studies so that he has good contacts by the time he is here that can “potentially” help him find a job.
Knock on all doors
Knock at all possible jobs. You don't have to feel shy about that. You never know from where you are going to get a job. You may know a professor working in your area of interest who doesn't have any openings now but potentially will have projects in the future. Communicate with him constantly showing your interest to work for him/her. When he/she finally gets a new project and wants to hire a student your name should automatically come to his/her mind.
Choose classes wisely
This is one of the best ways to land an assistantship. You know a professor doing research in your area of interest. Sign up for a class offered by that professor and do extremely well in that class. If you could impress him/her in the class with your skills there is a good chance that when you approach that professor next time he may offer you some assistantship or help you get some thing.
Get good grades in I semester
I have seen this happening a lot. Get good grades for all the courses you take for the first semester and then approach various professors and you have a lot better chances of getting some form of assistantship.
Having said all that, “luck” plays a very important role at least initially in getting an hourly job or assistantship. I know a lot of students who have done all those I mentioned above and still don't have any assistantship for the entire length of their graduate study. But these five tips are something that any graduate student can pursue that can enhance his/her chance of getting a job/assistantship.

A to Z of graduate study in the U.S.

Get to know these essentials before you set off for graduate studies in the U.S.
International students who go for doing their master's in the U.S. find themselves in a totally different environment than they are used to back in their home country. Here is a comprehensive list of what you need to know when you go for graduate studies in the U.S.
Assignment: Once a semester starts, a graduate student will be doing at least one assignment a week. Most of the assignments may not be as easy as your undergraduate assignments back in your home country. Again if one starts working on it just the day before the submission, one may not finish it in time. For most of the courses, assignments play a big role in the overall grades.
Bike: Bike or the bicycle is most probably going to be your mode of transportation during your study days in the U.S. It is the cheapest and the fastest vehicle available for a graduate student to go from one point to another.
Credit card: Your best friend in times of economic stress during your graduate studies. At least once during your studies you may be forced to use the credit card. Always remember one thing — if you don't use it wisely it would land you in trouble forever.
Dollar: The scarce commodity in the hand of a graduate student. Always try to make both ends meet with whatever you have.
Exams: An integral part of the courses you take. Professors will be testing your practical knowledge rather than your theoretical knowledge as you are used to in India. Initially you may find it tough but within a few weeks you will get used to the system.
Fast food: At least once a week you will be eating from either Burger King or Taco Bell or McDonalds. The reasons: you are too lazy to cook or you don't have time to go home for lunch. Whatever be the reasons, the result of eating fast food will show up on your body in a year or so as you start gaining lots of weight.
Google: Your life as a graduate student revolves around Google. Google has answers for many of your problems.
Hourly-job: The first thing a graduate student starts looking for once he/she lands in U.S. Some are lucky to get an hourly-job that can pay for the day-to-day expenses.
Internship: Getting an internship is the dream of any gradate student. In addition to a good pay, an internship offers real time experience that will be very helpful in the job search after your graduation.
Jobless: When you come to do your graduate studies be prepared for the worst case — not getting any job during the extended period of your study. The key here is not to lose hope and keep searching.
Kitchen: Never ever cooked in your life time? OK, things are about to change. You will be cooking food on your own or else you cannot survive on the money you make as a student.
Laundry: You wash your own clothes in the laundry machines in the apartment. It might be a new experience for some.
Manage: Very important factor to succeed. You may have to do so many things (study, hourly-job, cooking, etc) at the same time and one has to be a good “manager” to succeed in all these.
Night out: You may have experiences of ‘Night out' during your undergraduate studies. But now be prepared for many more ‘Night outs' especially during the last few days of the semester.
OPT: OPT or Optional Practical Training is the work permit with which you can work without a visa for a year for all graduates and for 29 months for some graduates (graduates of STEM). OPT process has become complex over years and you will be talking a lot about it starting a few months before your graduation.
Party: Graduate study is not all about studies, it is also about parties. Friday and Saturday nights are meant for partying and you are going to have a lot of fun during these parties.
Quality: Whatever it be — studies, hourly-jobs or exams or assignments it is the quality of the work that matters. Always strive to produce quality work and rest assured that you will be coming out with flying colours.
Room mates: Don't even think of staying in an apartment on your own when you are in U.S. for graduate studies. You may have to share a room with one or two or three others depending on the location of the school and your financial conditions.
Soda: You start drinking soda more than water. In some shops it is cheaper than buying drinking water.
Travel: Spring and summer break (total of four months) are for travel. You have lots of places to visit in the U.S. and this is the right time to go. A nice way to spend time away from school and studies.
USCIS: U.S. Citizen and Immigration Services or USCIS is the agency where you need to send all your documents for processing your visa and other immigration papers. You will be hearing a lot about this during your study days in U.S.
Visa: You will be forced to think/talk about this almost every day you are in U.S. The F1 visa status places a lot of restrictions on students and you will be reminded of your visa status during your entire stay in U.S.
Walmart: One-stop shop for all your shopping needs. You get almost all the stuff you need and more importantly at a very low price.
Yardstick: You should be keeping a yardstick for yourself all through your studies and see that you achieve those yardsticks. If you cannot, you should look back and see why you could not meet them.
Zest: The most important thing, the enthusiasm to accept the challenges you face during the graduate studies and the zest to overcome it. If you have that zeal everything else will fall in place.

best 119 out of 50 balls

Delhi Daredevils captain Virender Sehwag termed his match-winning 56-ball 119 against Deccan Chargers as “one of the best innings he has ever played in Twenty20s.”
“I never got a 100 in T20s. First six overs did not go our way. We were 29 for three in six overs. Since they didn’t have a fifth bowler, I thought if I can target their fourth and fifth bowler, we would be able to achieve this target,” Sehwag said after guiding Delhi to a four-wicket win over Deccan Chargers last night.
“The moment I got 23 runs in Ishan Malhotra’s over, the momentum shifted in our favour. I knew if I could bat 15 or 16 overs, the target should be achievable.”
The skipper feels that they have nothing to lose in their bid to win the remaining matches.
“We don’t have any pressure now as we have to win all five games. We have nothing to lose. Nobody is expecting us to reach semi—finals. If you have nothing to lose and if you play freely and fearlessly, you can achieve the goal. We have to enjoy and have a little bit of luck going our way.”
Sehwag cited the example of Chargers, who won five games in a row to qualify for the semi-finals last year.
“Deccan Chargers last year won five games in a row. So hopefully, this time Delhi Daredevils will emulate them.”
When asked as to why his teammates are not being able to produce quality performance, the Delhi skipper jumped to their defence.
“If you look at the 10 games that we have played, I have performed in only three matches. In that respect, even I have also not been consistent. I have to accept the maximum responsibility as most of the players save myself and Venugopal Rao do not have much experience. To build a good team, it takes time,” Sehwag said.
Sehwag also termed the crowd support in Hyderabad as “fantastic.”

Al-Qaeda confirms Osama bin Laden's death

The confirmation came in an Internet statement posted on militant websites, signed by "the general leadership" of al—Qaeda. The announcement opens the way for the group to name a successor to bin Laden.
Al—Qaeda on Friday confirmed the killing of Osama bin Laden and warned of retaliation, saying Americans’ “happiness will turn to sadness.”
The confirmation came in an Internet statement posted on militant websites, signed by “the general leadership” of al—Qaeda. The announcement opens the way for the group to name a successor to bin Laden. His deputy Ayman al—Zawahri is now the most prominent figure in the group and is a very likely contender to take his place.
The statement, dated May 3, was the first by the terror network since bin Laden was killed Monday by U.S. commandos in a raid on his hideout in Abbottabad, Pakistan. The statement’s authenticity could not be independently confirmed, but it was posted on websites where the group traditionally puts out its messages.
“We stress that the blood of the holy warrior sheik, Osama bin Laden, God bless him, is precious to us and to all Muslims and will no go in vain,” the statement said. “We will remain, God willing, a curse chasing the Americans and their agents, following them outside and inside their countries.”
“Soon, God willing, their happiness will turn to sadness,” it said, “their blood will be mingled with their tears.”
In the statement, al—Qaeda also called on the people of Pakistan - “where Sheik Osama was killed” - to rise up in revolt against its leaders. It also said that an audio message bin Laden recorded a week before his death would be issued soon.
